TheMaster Studio Speculative Softwareat theDesign Departmentof theFachhochschule Potsdamis dedicated to the design and exploration of creative, experimental software user interfaces. It is part of a full-time two-year Master’s programme, taught in English. Theinformational and promotional websitecombinesScopewithGeologica. Scope is used as a variable font. The main title and first-level headings make use of live font interpolation, with the vowels in each word changing their width on cursor movement. Sub-level headings and student names are also set in Scope.
This typography system embodies experimental-academic energy—the kind of forward-thinking modernism that emerges from design research institutions. The variable font interpolation creates a sense of living, breathing technology that feels both scholarly rigorous and playfully speculative, perfectly capturing the studio's mission to explore creative software interfaces.
Geologica and Scope form a complementary system where Scope's variable capabilities become the conceptual hero, demonstrating the very type of interactive design thinking the program teaches. Scope's geometric construction and wide weight range provide structural clarity for hierarchies, while its variable width animations on hover create micro-interactions that mirror software interface design. Geologica's more neutral characteristics provide readable body text without competing with Scope's performative role.
This pairing works because it creates functional hierarchy through technological capability rather than just visual contrast. Scope carries the conceptual weight—literally demonstrating variable font technology through live interpolation—while Geologica provides stable, readable support. The tension between static and dynamic typography mirrors the program's balance of theoretical foundation and experimental practice.
