ITC Korinna

ITC Korinna is built on a dynamic skeleton with diagonal stress and moderately open apertures, yet departs dramatically from humanist tradition through its extreme stroke contrast and razor-sharp hairline serifs. The letterforms exhibit pronounced thick-to-thin modulation that approaches Didone territory, but the diagonal stress axis and slightly bracketed serifs place it firmly in the transitional camp. Its most defining characteristic is the interplay between generous x-height proportions and high contrast construction—the counters in letters like 'e' and 'a' remain reasonably open despite the dramatic stroke variation. This creates a face that reads as both authoritative and approachable, bridging the warmth of Old Style proportions with the drama of Modern contrast. Korinna excels in display applications where its high contrast can be appreciated, but the robust x-height and careful counter management make it surprisingly versatile for shorter text blocks. However, those hairline strokes become problematic at small sizes or in challenging print conditions, limiting its utility as a true workhorse text face.
