Maison Neue

Maison Neue is built on a geometric skeleton with closed apertures and vertical stress, creating a rational, systematic character typical of mid-century Swiss grotesques. The letterforms show minimal stroke contrast and construction-based geometry—the 'o' approaches perfect circularity, the 'a' has a closed counter, and terminals are cut at right angles without humanist inflection. Its x-height runs moderately high relative to cap height, while counters remain reasonably open despite the closed aperture model. This typeface belongs to the geometric grotesk tradition that emerged from Bauhaus principles, sharing DNA with Futura and Avenir but executed with more contemporary refinement. In practice, Maison Neue excels as a corporate workhorse—its geometric rationality projects competence and modernity without the clinical coldness of pure geometric sans like Futura. However, its lack of italics severely limits its typographic range, making it unsuitable for complex editorial work where emphasis and hierarchy are critical.
