Goudy Handtooled

About

Goudy Handtooled follows a dynamic form model with diagonal stress and calligraphic roots, but its defining characteristic is the hand-carved, tooled treatment that creates an inline shadow effect within each letterform. The contrast is moderate, with visible thick-thin variation typical of oldstyle proportions, but the decorative incised details dominate the optical impression. Counter shapes remain reasonably open despite the inline treatment, and the x-height sits in traditional oldstyle proportions relative to the capitals. This face descends from Frederic Goudy's foundational American oldstyle work, but the handtooled treatment transforms it into a decidedly Arts & Crafts specimen—evoking carved wood type and hand-lettered signage from the early 20th century. The tooled effect creates visual texture and warmth, but this same decorative complexity makes it unsuitable for sustained reading, breaking down rapidly below display sizes where the fine incised details become illegible mud.
